What Size Dining Table Do I Need? Seating Chart and Room Guide
The most common mistake we see isn't the wrong wood or the wrong style. It's the wrong size. A table that's too big makes a room feel cramped. Too small and the room looks empty, and Thanksgiving gets tight fast.
Here's how to get the size right.
How many people does a dining table seat?
Plan on about 24 inches of table edge per person. 30 inches feels roomy, especially with armchairs.
| Table size | Seats comfortably |
|---|---|
| 48" round | 4 |
| 54" round | 4–6 |
| 60" round | 6 |
| 72" round | 8 |
| 60" rectangle | 4–6 |
| 72" rectangle | 6 |
| 84" rectangle | 8 |
| 96" rectangle | 8–10 |
| 108" rectangle | 10 |
| 120" rectangle | 10–12 |

What size table seats 8?
For a rectangle, go with 84 inches long. That gives three people per side and one on each end. If you host big holidays or use wide armchairs, go up to 96 inches.
For a round table, you'll want about 72 inches across to fit 8.
Leave room to walk around it
This is where most people get tripped up. You need space between the table edge and the wall or other furniture:
- 36 inches minimum so people can pull out chairs and sit down.
- 42–48 inches if it's a walkway or you want it to feel open.
Easy formula: take your room's length and width and subtract 72 inches from each (36 inches per side). What's left is the biggest table that fits. For example, a 12' x 14' room (144" x 168") fits a table up to about 72" x 96".
How wide should a dining table be?
- 36 inches is the minimum for place settings on both sides.
- 40–42 inches is the sweet spot for most homes.
- 48 inches gives room for serving dishes and centerpieces down the middle. It's great for big tables, but it can make it hard to talk across.
Base style changes the seating
Two tables the same size can seat a different number of people:
- Four legs at the corners limit who can sit at the ends.
- Trestle and double pedestal bases keep the corners clear, so you can squeeze in extra chairs at the ends. The Hartwell is a good example.
- Single pedestal round tables have no legs in the way at all, which is why they fit more people for their size.

The Holloway round pedestal table. No legs in the way, so eight chairs fit around it.
Think about extension leaves
If you seat 6 most nights but 10 a few times a year, an extension table might be the answer. Many of our tables can be built with leaves. Just ask during your consultation.
